Soca originated in Trinidad and Tobago around 1970, pioneered by artists like Lord Shorty (later Ras Shorty I) who sought to create a fusion of calypso with Indian rhythms and soul music. The genre quickly gained popularity across the Caribbean and diaspora.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Soca evolved with the introduction of synthesizers and electronic drums, giving it a more polished, high-energy sound. Subgenres like Ragga Soca and Groovy Soca emerged, each with distinct tempos and vibes.

Culturally, Soca is inseparable from Carnival, providing the soundtrack for street parades, fetes, and competitions. It celebrates joy, resilience, and unity, with lyrics often addressing social issues, romance, and partying.

When producing Soca, start with a driving drum pattern: kick on 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4, and hi-hats on eighth notes. Add a syncopated bassline that follows the kick but with rhythmic variations. Use steel drum samples or synthesized leads for melody, often playing short, catchy motifs.

Swing is minimal; the feel is straight and energetic. Layer percussion like shakers, cowbells, and tambourines to build intensity. Vocals should be delivered with energy, often using call-and-response. Modern Soca incorporates electronic elements like sidechain compression and synth pads, but the core rhythm must remain tight and danceable.
