KHAYAL

Khayal is characterized by a slow, meditative alap (introduction) that gradually builds into a faster, rhythmic composition. The vocalist uses intricate ornamentations like gamak, meend, and taan to explore the raga's notes. The tanpura provides a continuous drone, while the tabla keeps a rhythmic cycle (tala).

The mood is often contemplative and expressive, with the singer improvising extensively within the raga's framework. The tempo typically starts slow (vilambit) and accelerates to medium (madhya) and fast (drut) sections.

Khayal originated in the 14th century during the Delhi Sultanate, evolving from the older dhrupad style. The word 'khayal' means 'imagination' in Persian, reflecting its emphasis on creative improvisation.

In the 18th century, the genre flourished under the patronage of Mughal courts, especially in the regions of Delhi, Gwalior, and Agra. It gradually became the dominant vocal form of Hindustani classical music, with distinct gharanas (schools) developing their own stylistic nuances.

Culturally, Khayal is performed in concerts and festivals, often as the main item in a classical music evening. It embodies the spiritual and aesthetic ideals of Indian classical music, with the raga serving as a framework for deep emotional expression.

When producing Khayal, focus on capturing the raw vocal performance with minimal processing. The tanpura should be tuned precisely to the raga's tonic (sa) and fifth (pa) or fourth (ma). The tabla player follows a specific tala, often teental (16 beats) or jhaptal (10 beats).

The BPM ranges from very slow (55-70) in the vilambit section to medium (70-100) and fast (100-132) in the drut. The swing is subtle, with the tabla's bols (syllables) creating a rhythmic pulse. No synthetic samples are used; the sound is purely acoustic.
