For producers, dub is built around a solid drum and bass foundation. Start with a classic reggae drum pattern: kick on 1 and 3, snare on 2 and 4, with hi-hats on off-beats. Add a deep, melodic bassline that follows the chord roots. Use heavy compression on the drum bus and sidechain the bass to the kick. The key is in the effects: send individual tracks to auxiliary busses with spring reverb and tape echo, automate the sends to create dramatic drops and swells. Typical samples include rimshots, cowbells, and organ stabs. Mix in a "dubwise" style, leaving space and using the mixing board as an instrument.
